Frequently Asked Questions - Summer Staff
Am I old enough to be on staff?
We are excited to have people of all ages involved with camp! If you are 14 and 15 years old, you are welcome to apply, but we have limited staff spots available for this age range.
What is the Hiring Process?
Is this paid or volunteer work?
Most summer positions at Jonah are volunteer (Summer Leadership Team is paid sub-minimum wage.) We understand that finances are an important aspect of life, so we encourage you to give this decision some prayer and see where God is calling you! Staff members are given free room and board for the duration of their stay, and we are also happy to trach your volunteer hours and write letters of recommendation for job and college applications. If you're interested in doing some personal support raising, please email program@campjonah.com and we are happy to help you with this. Working at summer camp is also doing short-term missions!
Am I committing to be at Jonah this summer when I apply?
No, you will be asked to make a commitment if/when you are offered a position for the summer.
Do I need to come for all 7 weeks of the summer?
The very best experience comes from a full seven-week commitment, but we realize this is not an option for everyone and we are very happy to have short-term volunteers to fill in a lot of cracks. So please still apply!
What If I Have Dietary Restrictions?
We are pretty good about adjusting menus, or dishes, for people with dietary needs. We will add your name to the list of people with food allergies and have options available for you. In the past, we have adjusted for gluten free, dairy free, no tree nuts, no peanuts, and others. Just let us know ahead of time.
What If I Have a Medical Condition or Disability?
We have had many staff members with medical conditions or disabilities over the years. You will need to communicate clearly what your needs are, prior to your arrival, and we will make every effort to accommodate them.

What is the Hiring Process?
- All applicants will fill out the same application.
- Minors will need parent or guardian signatures on certain forms which we will email separately.
- A background check will be performed for each applicant.
- 3 References (not immediate family members or your friends) are required.
- Once references and the background check are complete, each applicant may be interviewed either over the phone or in person.
- The Camp Coordinator, Program Director and other staff members will consider where and when the applicant will be most successful in fulfilling the duties of their assigned position. Your stated interest will be considered in this process, but does not guarantee a placement.
- A “Letter Of Commitment” will be emailed, along with an attached copy of the Staff Manual. All Staffies are required to sign a document stating they have “read, understand and agree to abide by” the material covered in the staff manual.
- You will receive required training during Staff Training One and Two.
